Environmental sanitation, CLTS, and community mobilization for healthier communities.
LIHOC works with communities on environmental sanitation and Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) to eliminate open defecation and improve water and hygiene. In collaboration with RUWESA, we conduct advocacy and sensitization so communities take ownership of their environment and health.
CLTS mobilizes communities to become Open Defecation Free (ODF). Sensitization revealed that many diseases were linked to dirty environments—cholera, diarrhea, malaria. Through mapping, transect walks, and the F-diagram, communities learned the impact of open defecation and formed Water and Sanitation Committees (WASHCOM). Over 125 new toilets have been dug in project communities.
